Tumbatu Island is the third-largest island making up Zanzibar, part of Tanzania in east Africa. The island is located off the northwest coast of Zanzibar's main island, Unguja. It is a poor and isolated place although it is only 2km far from the Zanziba coast.

Tumbatu was an independent state until the middle of the nineteenth century. Seeing the ruins and even meeting local fishermen and farmers can be a genuinely awe inspiring experience.
